Detours and Traffic Changes

A key goal during construction of the PMH1 Project is to minimize disruption and maximize predictability. Because the Port Mann corridor is a vital community and goods movement corridor for British Columbia and the Lower Mainland, maintaining traffic flow during construction is vital. To do so, the contractor must often implement detours and traffic pattern changes to facilitate construction and allow traffic to continue to flow.

Traffic pattern changes are more common and involve shifting traffic within an existing roadway. Many traffic pattern changes are not noticeable to travelers and there is minimal traffic disruption as they are designed to allow for safe and efficient traffic flow.  Depending on the extent of the traffic pattern change, there may be road signage and other directional guides to assist with traffic movement.

Detours are defined as changes that require traffic to be diverted off the existing roadway onto other streets or highways in order to move around a construction area. A detour may divert traffic to another interchange to access or exit from Highway 1 onto other routes.  Detours are kept to a minimum, and road signage is used to direct traffic and advise travelers of upcoming detours.

If the traffic pattern changes and/or detours will result in some traffic disruption or noticeable route changes, construction updates are sent out to email groups, and the information is posted on the website. There may also be advertisements in local and provincial newspapers, notices sent to residents and businesses in the affected areas, and other public notifications to help raise awareness of the upcoming traffic changes.

Together, these measures help to move traffic efficiently through construction areas while providing a safe work area for construction crews.
