The Port Mann Highway 1 (PMH1) Improvement Project includes approximately 14 kilometers of noise mitigation measures along the 37-kilometre Highway 1 project corridor. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure engaged environmental specialists to conduct a comprehensive study, which included collecting current noise conditions and evaluating traffic and noise levels to predict future conditions after highway widening is complete. Following this process, recommendations were developed to avoid and minimize noise effects, consistent with the Ministry's noise policy.
The PMH1 Project includes a number of measures to address noise related to construction activity and long-term noise related to highway traffic. This includes the use of noise walls and landscaping in the form of earth berms and buffers that create a physical barrier to redirect sound. Noise mitigation is planned along the project corridor where future expected noise levels warrant these measures.
