Construction Schedule

2010

Vancouver/Burnaby  

  • Install new deck panels and build retaining walls at approaches to Grandview Highway HOV ramps
  • Continue construction of foundations, columns and retaining walls at the Boundary Road and BNSF railway underpasses to support new Highway 1 lanes
  • Relocate utilities between Grandview Highway and Willingdon Avenue
  • Install girders for Kensington Avenue and Sprott Street overpasses
  • Begin construction of support columns for new Gaglardi Way overpass

Coquitlam/Cape Horn

  • Begin construction of new highway lanes over CP Rail
  • Construction of connections between the Port Mann Bridge and Lougheed Highway eastbound continues
  • New Port Mann Bridge
  • Pier and tower construction continues
  • South approach deck construction complete, gantry moves to north approach
  • Complete construction of south tower (to a height of 160 metres)
  • Begin hanging bridge deck segments and cables from south tower

Surrey

  • Construction continues on new 152 Street overpass
  • Construct and pave the new Highway 1 lanes between 168 and 192 Street
  • Construction of the 160 Street and 104 Avenue overpasses continues
  • Construction of the new 156 Street retaining walls and begin constructing 156 Street HOV/transit ramps
  • Ongoing utility relocations

2011

Vancouver/Burnaby

  • Highway 1 widening and lane reconstruction between First Avenue and Boundary Road continues
  • Construction of Sprott Street and Kensington Avenue overpasses continues
  • Construction of Willingdon Avenue and Gaglardi Way overpasses continues
  • Highway widening over Brunette River and North Road begins
  • Construct new fish and wildlife culverts across Highway 1 between Kensington Avenue and Gaglardi Way

Coquitlam/Cape Horn

  • Continue construction of new Cape Horn Interchange ramps and overpasses (total of fifteen)
  • Close the King Edward Street underpass for three months to demolish the existing structure, lower Highway 1 and construct the final stages of the new overpass
  • Complete CP Rail Stage 2 and temporarily shift eastbound highway traffic to remove remaining portions of the old crossing and construct the final phase of new highway lanes
  • Relocate CP Rail track onto a new alignment just south of its current location
  • Construction of the new Brunette Avenue Interchange begins

New Port Mann Bridge

  • Complete construction of north tower
  • North approach bridge deck Installation continues
  • Begin hanging bridge deck segments and cables from north tower

Surrey

  • Construction of all new ramps and overpasses continues
  • Continue construction of local connection lanes from the new Port Mann Bridge to west of 156 Street
  • Construction of a new Barnston Drive Overpass across 176 Street begins

2012

Vancouver/Burnaby

  • Continue Highway 1 widening and lane reconstruction between First Avenue and Boundary Road
  • Continue construction of new transit-only ramps to access Lougheed Town Centre SkyTrain Station at Government Street
  • Continue work on Willingdon Avenue Interchange and overpass replacement and environmental improvements at Still Creek
  • Continue construction of the new Kensington Avenue Interchange and begin removal of the existing overpass

Coquitlam/Cape Horn

  • Highway 1 widening and connections to the new Port Mann Bridge and Lougheed Highway completed
  • Construct noise walls in the Cape Horn area
  • New King Edward Street overpass and Brunette Avenue Interchange improvements completed

New Port Mann Bridge

  • Bridge deck and cables complete, followed by surfacing and paving
  • MILESTONE: Open new bridge to eight lanes of traffic – travel time savings and tolling begin
  • MILESTONE: First rapid transit service crosses the Port Mann Bridge in more than 25 years
  • Start dismantling original Port Mann Bridge

Surrey

  • Complete reconstruction of the 152 Street Interchange and 156 Street median HOV ramps
  • Complete construction of the Barnston Drive overpass
  • Complete improvements to the 160 Street and 176 Street Interchanges
  • Remove old overpasses at 152 Street, 160 Street and 176 Street
  • Complete South Fraser Perimeter Road paving

2013

Vancouver/Burnaby

  • Complete Highway 1 widening and lane reconstruction between First Avenue and Willingdon Avenue
  • Complete construction of Boundary Road overpass and ramps
  • Complete improvements of Willingdon Avenue Interchange and Still Creek environmental site
  • Complete Gaglardi Way Interchange
  • Complete Grandview Highway Interchange and dedicated HOV and transit ramps
  • MILESTONE: Open all new Highway 1 lanes through Coquitlam, Burnaby and Vancouver

Coquitlam/Cape Horn

  • All construction on Lougheed Highway and Mary Hill Bypass and all structures in the Cape Horn Interchange complete
  • New Cape Horn Interchange open to commuters
  • Brunette Avenue Interchange improvements complete

Port Mann Bridge

  • Continue dismantling of the original Port Mann Bridge
  • Ongoing work to widen North and South approaches of new Port Mann Bridge to final 10 lane capacity 

2014

New Highway 1 lanes were opened through Coquitlam, Burnaby and Vancouver in December 2013, delivering the full time saving benefits of the Port Mann / Highway 1 Improvement Project.

Final finishing work will continue through 2014. This primarily involves completion of the final two lanes of the Port Mann Bridge and their connections to Highway 1, which are necessary for future capacity. Finishing work west of the Port Mann Bridge primarily involves final top lift paving on highway lanes, landscaping and drainage

Vancouver/Burnaby

  • Complete new transit-only ramps to access Lougheed Town Centre SkyTrain Station at Government Street
  • Complete construction of Sprott Street and Kensington Avenue Interchanges
  • Complete final finishing work along Highway 1 through Coquitlam and Burnaby including top lift paving, drainage and median work

Coquitlam/Cape Horn

  • Complete construction of dedicated  commercial vehicle only ramps at Fawcett Road connecting highway 1 and United Boulevard
  • Complete all construction on United Boulevard
  • Complete all landscaping and environmental improvement works

Port Mann Bridge

  • Complete dismantling of the original Port Mann Bridge
  • Complete the new Port Mann Bridge to final 10 lane capacity and multi-use path
